Where to eat in Peckham

Kudu

Painted concrete walls meet mid-century furniture, the interiors of this sunny spot are enough to draw you in—and trust us when we say, you’ll be glad you walked through the door. The menu is designed to ‘celebrate hunters and foragers’—meaning every plate is stacked with the best seasonal ingredients. Whether you’re visiting for dinner, or their anything-but-ordinary take on brunch, you’ll get the best of South Africa and London on a well-presented plate.

Nandine

Fleeing from war in her home of Qaladze (now Iraqi Kurdistan), Pary Baban—owner of Nandine—travelled from village to village, picking up recipes along the way. This family-run restaurant is built on those recipes. In three words, the Kurdish menu is colourful, vibrant and flavourful. Arrive hungry and eat lots.

Where: 82 Vestry Rd, Camberwell, London SE5 8PQ and 45 Camberwell Church Street, Camberwell, SE5 8TR

Artusi

Minimalist decor and fresh handmade pasta, Artusi is a Michelin-guide Italian restaurant after our hearts. They have, what they call a ‘chalkboard menu’, to allow for quick edits in response to seasonal produce, or exciting new ingredients that have made their way to the kitchen from their local suppliers. It’s the perfect place to take a date, or gather mates for a night of good food and good company.

Where to go for drinks in Peckham

Franks

We mentioned a bar on the roof of a multistorey carpark—Franks is that bar. Come summer, this place is buzzing with locals, all armed with rounds of sunset Negronis, which is just one of the reasons why it’s in our top pick of rooftop bars in the city. If you’re new to London (welcome) this is a great place to see the skyline and join the party.

Brick Brewery

Sitting in a railway arch behind Peckham Rye station, you’ll find Brick Brewery. If the malty smell of hops doesn’t give it away, the distant hum of music and a party should point you in the right direction. Their bar (aptly called the Tap Room) has 20 craft beers poured straight from the source and guest draughts that have been hand-selected from other breweries. Grab a pint and perch yourself on a bench—you’ll be sure to make friends in no time.

Two Hundred Rye Lane

Two Hundred Rye Lane does two things—small plates and cocktails. But as we’re in the ‘drinks’ section of this guide, we’ll focus on the latter. The space is bright, airy and open all day, so you can enjoy a Kaffir Julep whenever you like, without sacrificing daylight in an underground speakeasy. What’s more, they have a beer garden and their very reasonable happy hour runs Monday to Thursday (£3 beers, £15 wines, £5 cocktails ‘til 9pm). Who’s getting the first round in?

Forza Wine

Drinks, snacks, views—the winning combo behind this rooftop bar in Peckham (yes, another one, the real party’s above-ground around these parts.) Even though it’s in southeast London, it has a bit of a New York vibe to it, with floor-to-ceiling windows and an outdoor terrace. If you want to combine the rooftop experience with a glass of rioja and some Italian small plates, Forza Wine’s for the win.

D.A.Y

Launched by three sisters—Disha, Apee and Yukti (D.A.Y) this Scandi-style boutique is a must-visit on Peckham’s Bellenden Road. They stock independent designers from all over the world for menswear, womenswear and accessories, tailoring their selection for timeless, sophisticated style. With résumés that include Net-a-Porter, Stella & Dot and Ted Baker, their in-store styling service is golden. PS: There’s a great interview with the sisters over on SouthEast15.

Launched by two friends (Amanda and Kai) who had the idea during a coffee break, the luxury homeware brand creates furniture, textiles and finishing touches for the clean, Scandinavian home of your dreams. Their studio is in Peckham’s Bussey building, where you can make an appointment to check out their showroom.

L’Appartement

No kitchen, no desk and no hotel room (at least for us) is complete without some plants. L’Appartement is a colourful jungle on Peckham’s Bellenden Road (just down from D.A.Y) and has a wide range of ferns, cacti, and palms to grow your own indoor landscape. Plus, the two ladies who own and run the business are creative powerhouses ??

Review Bookshop

On the corner of a Peckham sidestreet (Bellenden Road again) you’ll find Review—one of the most treasured stores in the neighbourhood. Run by novelist Evie Wyld, it’s full of page-turners and home to Peckham’s annual Literary Festival. Grab a coffee nearby, pick up something by an author you don’t know and sit outside the shop on a sunny afternoon.

Listen to live music

The CLF Art Cafe isn’t shy when it comes to its music line-up, describing one of their events as “an audio blowtorch setting the room alight”. Expect disco, funk, and soul blaring from the speakers, with great artists, live performances and a buzzy, local crowd in Peckham’s Bussey building.
