It’s been a jam-packed summer already in the capital, but it’s not over yet… Here are 5 things to do in London this August.
BBC Proms – From now until September
This world-famous annual celebration of classical music returns to the Royal Albert Hall throughout the summer. This year’s sci-fi theme celebrates 50 years since man landed on the moon, with performances including live scores to the likes of Gravity and Alien: Covenant. As well as many other performances of traditional classical pieces, there will also be special late night prom curated by Radiohead’s Johnny Greenwood which will include a performance of Steve Reich’s ‘Pulse’. Tickets for all the events are available now, with many “day promming” tickets made available on the day of each show offering people the chance to enjoy these world-class performances for only £6. That’s right, SIX POUNDS.

Notting Hill Carnival – 25/26 August
Notting Hill Carnival needs no introduction, having been a staple in West London’s summer calendar since 1966. The largest street carnival in Europe, it promises to be bigger than ever in 2019 with dancers, performers, colourful costumes, 37 static sound systems, soca floats, steel bands and, of course, the most delicious Caribbean food! This year’s sound systems appearing at the carnival include People’s Sound System, Channel One, and the legendary King Tubby’s. This is not one to miss!

London Craft Beer Festival – 9-11 August
London’s premier craft beer festival returns to Tobacco Dock on 9th August for 3 days of the finest beer, food and music. Throughout the weekend you can enjoy brews from the likes of Mikkeller, Brewdog, Partizan, Magic Rock and countless others; as well as DJ sets from Hot Chip, Friendly Fires, Kaiser Chiefs and more. Described as “the capital’s biggest and best celebration of craft beer and the modern brewing culture”, there’s sure to be plenty on offer for everyone, beer connoisseur or not. Film 4 Summer Screen – 8-21 August
Taking place in the stunning surrounds of Somerset House, Film 4 Summer Screen brings you classic cinema as well as UK premiers under the stars. Film4 states: “Over fourteen summer evenings, London’s largest outdoor screen and cinema-quality surround sound ensure you enjoy every frame, every look and every line of these fantastic films.”, and who could argue with that? Screenings this year include God’s Own Country, The Matrix and Black Panther, with tickets available now.

Return of the Premier League – Across the month.
This list could never be complete without mentioning the return of Premier League action! The season’s traditional curtain-raise, the Charity Shield, will be contested between Manchester City and Liverpool at Wembley Stadium on 4th August; with the official season kicking off the following weekend. Key games being played in the capital across the next month include Chelsea vs Leicester and the North London derby between Tottenham and Arsenal. As well as action in England’s top league, we shouldn’t forget a whole host of games being held across the football league and lower leagues. With 13 professional teams based in London and almost 100 amateaur leagues, there’s certainly no shortage of action all year round.
